Signpost 38 stands close to Navio Roman Fort at Brough in the Hope Valley. It is one of the society's earliest signposts, dating from 1909. The main plate is big, cast-iron and very heavy
David Morton, our Signpost Officer, with help from two local men recently removed the signpost and its associated plaque so that they could be renovated
David arranged for them to be shot-blasted and powder-coated at Stockport Powder Coating. They were then highlighted and refixed to their post.
The main plate was designed and made by Rowland Mower, who became our second footpaths inspector cum signpost officer, when his father and founder-member Thomas died in 1915.
Brough is an Old English word for a fort.
